Downtown Miami Land Given For Trump Presidential Library

Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet on Tuesday approved turning over property at Miami Dade College for a presidential library for President Donald Trump.

DeSantis called the measure “a unique opportunity for the state.”

The land is on the college’s Wolfson Campus and has been used for employee parking.

It is close to the century-old Freedom Tower, which is on the list of U.S. National Historic Landmarks as it served as a center for Cuban refugees.

The 2.63-acre site targeted for the presidential library was purchased for the college for $25 million in 2004.

“I think this would be great for the state to house our first presidential Library, great for Miami Dade College,” Attorney General James Uthmeier said.

“It has a lot of nice opportunities for partnerships and their students to find employment and other educational opportunities.”

The Cabinet is made up of Uthmeier, state Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson.

The Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation will have five years to move forward with the project.

In June, DeSantis signed a bill (SB 118) that prevents local governments from placing restrictions on presidential libraries and gives the state authority to regulate establishing and operating such facilities.

Last week, DeSantis said the state “worked and negotiated” with the Trump administration on adding the presidential library at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton or Florida International University in Miami, “but their preference was for the land next to the Freedom Tower.”
