FLORIDA - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has sharply rebuked California leaders for their handling of recent protests tied to immigration enforcement raids in Los Angeles.
Speaking at a Florida Cabinet meeting Tuesday, DeSantis accused California of ignoring federal immigration law by continuing to operate as a sanctuary state.
He claimed the state’s leadership has, for years, refused to cooperate with federal authorities, creating an environment where immigration enforcement is undermined.
DeSantis said the law is now finally being enforced, referring to recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Los Angeles that reportedly resulted in over 100 arrests.
The Florida governor, widely seen as a potential national contender, also warned that any similar unrest in his state would be met with immediate and severe legal consequences.
“The minute you cross into attacking law enforcement, any type of rioting, any type of vandalism, looting, just be prepared to have the law come down on you,” he said.
“We will make an example of you, you can guarantee it.”
DeSantis highlighted Florida’s 2021 law known as the Combating Public Disorder Act, which increased penalties for violent protests, made it a felony to block roadways during demonstrations, and granted civil immunity to drivers who encounter protesters obstructing roads.
The law was signed in response to nationwide protests that followed the death of George Floyd.
While DeSantis condemned the protests in Los Angeles as political stunts, California Governor Gavin Newsom has challenged the legality of federal military involvement, escalating tensions in the national debate over immigration enforcement.
