Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Ramirez is reportedly hospitalized and in critical but stable condition in the Tampa area. The Miami Herald is reporting that Ramirez shot himself, but this has not been confirmed by WIOD.

The Miami-Dade Police Department has issued the following statement on Twitter early this morning:

“We have been advised by local law enforcement agencies that our Director, Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Ramirez, has suffered a critical injury in the Tampa area. We understand he is currently undergoing surgery. We ask you to please keep him in your prayers. Details surrounding the incident are being investigated jointly by the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. We will provide information as it becomes available.”

Ramirez, 52, reportedly was in Tampa attending a Sheriff’s Association conference over the weekend. He filed to run for County Sheriff in 2024.

Ramirez's tenure with the Miami-Dade Police Department began in 1995. In 2020, he was named police director. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava then promoted him in 2022 to oversee the police department and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to NewsRadio 610 for the details.
